12xHolland is an intercultural exchange project with art - in a most wide sense - as bridge between people. Inspired by the Japan-Netherlands history, Netherlands's artists and specialists are invited during one month in Japan to live and work. Herewith the meeting and exchange with the contemporary local Japanese citizens will be the main purpose. At the same time, in a spontaneous and creative ambience, a part of the contemporary Netherlands are displayed and possible cliches are replaced by their own experiences and own interpretations. In this way, 12xHolland strives to participate in the general intercultural understanding and namely in the interaction and communication between Netherlands and Japan.

The project 12xHolland 2009 is going to facilitate two Dutch professional artists and specialists to go live and work in historic Hirado, Nagasaki prefecture. This will take place in the period between September 15 and September 29 2009. 12xHolland will organize workshops, concerts, lectures, visits to schools and other kind of presentations for the two participators. They will also take courses themselves in Japanese art forms.

This year 2009 is the special year for 12xHolland. First of all, this year is the 10th anniversary of 12xHolland. And also, in 2009 we are commemorating the 400th anniversary of commercial relations, which the first VOC building was build in Hirado and an official trade was permitted to the Netherlands. Therefore Hirado city will celebrate the special 'Hirado-Holland year'. For celebrating the year, 12xHolland 2009 will invite two new participators and six old participators. Also, as the special event, the 12xHolland Art Festival will be organised and the performances of all participators will be held.
