Shinwa Bank was founded in 1879 as the 99th National Bank by the former feudal lord of the Hirado clan, Akira Matsura. This year, coinciding with both the 130th anniversary of the bank and the 400th anniversary of the Dutch – Japanese trade relations, a very special selection of the bank’s valuable pottery collection will be lend and put on display to the public. On display are 30 items of Old Imari Porcelain and works from the Hirado clan kilns of Mikawachi. Many of these items were once exported as furniture to European Royal families or other European nobility after which they returned back to their regional homes. Large plates with the signature of the Dutch East Indies Company are also on display, a reminder of the ties between Hirado and the Netherlands.
